I want to get through optical lattices and start talking about stimulated Raman transitions in the next class. It's really sad, but there just aren't good references on this material. Like a broken record, I'll suggest trying:

• The ion trap "bible". Try reading pages 265-267 to learn about stimulated Raman transitions. Be aware that this theory is being done for a trapped particle in the so-called "Lamb-Dicke limit"; we're going to start with free atoms, but which have infinite mass. You can check out pages 41-51 in Brian Kings' thesis for more detail.
