Look at Chapter 4 and the related complements from Cohen-Tannoudji's book on quantum mechanics (e-reserves). Points to concentrate on:

• You can skim over some of the traditional (and tedious) polarizer arguments
• p405-415: spin-1/2 systems + off-diagonal coupling
• p417-419: Pauli matrices
• p424-429: "fictitious spin" associated with a 2-level system
• p443-454: resonance! yee-haw!
• p470-475: coupling involving an unstable state

You might also want to crack open a quantum mechanics book and read about density matrices.
